557 arrests were made at the 2016 Euro in France in about ten days, but government officials insist that they are quite satisfied with how things are going.
Bernard Cazeneuve, the French interior minister, shared that the arrests involved “violent supporters” and police detained 344 people. 27 of them have spent time in jail because of their involvement in some violent incidents. 25 offenders were even deported from the European country.
After a rocky start, things seem to be getting quieter, and fans are finally able to focus on great soccer games. On June 11, less than 24 hours after the opening day of the big sporting event, violent clashes erupted in Marseille between locals, Russian and English supporters.
France has been on high security alert since terrorist attacks claimed the lives of 130 people in November 2015. Some soccer fans even opted to skip the competition because of fear.
France brilliantly hosted the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and although the 2016 UEFA European Championship has not been on the same level regarding the organization, the athletes have been performing at an excellent level, and most fans seem to enjoy the matches.
